About Giovanna Scott
The Story Behind the Stitches
The Artistic Philosophy (or, Why Everyday Objects Need Intense Embroidery)
She's a Brisbane-based visual artist who looks at mundane everyday objects, like a lonely coffee cup, a teapot taking a beating from boiling water, or a piece of fruit, and thinks, “Yes, this needs some aggressive, completely unnecessary embroidery.”
Giovanna's work heavily romanticises the "beautiful ordinariness" of daily life. This is a poetic, art-gallery way of saying she spends hours hiding away in her studio avoiding real-world adult responsibilities and Life Admin tasks. By layering vibrant acrylic painting with hand-cut, custom-painted paper collage and free-form machine stitching, she creates complex textures designed to celebrate the perfectly imperfect spaces we actually live in.
Art for Real Homes (Chaos Included)
Giovanna doesn't create art for minimalist showrooms or cold, pristine galleries. She creates for authentic people with real, loud, beautiful, chaotic homes.
- The Inspiration? The mismatched furniture.
- The huge architectural voids that dare you to stuff up the decorating.
- The kids who thunder through the house knocking everything off-kilter.
- The dogs who completely refuse to respect your personal space.
- And, of course, the dining table that immediately becomes a household dumping ground.
Her pieces don’t demand your polite, hushed respect; they simply settle into a forgotten corner of your lounge room and beg you to look at them instead of checking your phone.
The Method Behind the Madness
If you’ve ever wondered how someone gets a sewing machine to co-operate with layered paper and canvas without destroying both, you’re not alone. Giovanna's signature technique involves painting her own patterned papers, cutting them, layering them, and running them through the machine. It is a highly tactile, slightly chaotic process that results in incredibly textured, collectible mixed-media art.
This ensures that even if you don't care about the composition, you can spend twenty minutes marveling at how she hasn't entirely broken her machine yet.
When she isn’t letting her dog Ruby hold her hostage in the studio or building out her latest collection, she can be found hosting immersive workshops or opening up her studio space, affectionately known as The Galleragio, for community open studio weekends.
