It’s All About The Hair (& a giveaway)

I confess to being a bit of a Diva when it comes to my own hair.
It needs to be cut in a certain manner, it needs to be blow-dried in a certain manner, the products I choose are carefully vetted, even the brushes are considered with surgeon-like precision.

So it’s no surprise that when I began this path to Mixed Media Art-dom, I found my bliss while drawing and painting in the HAIR!
Here’s a little sneak of 2 from the upcoming series…..

I am working with lights and darks, highlights and lowlights, sometimes using 4 different colours to get it just right.
Yes, a little obssessed.

And what’s with the lips, right?!!!!
Well, that’s for another time, another story, another blog post.

And with Valentine’s Day this Thursday, I put together some mini canvases to celebrate Love, but the designs are mostly “anytime to say I Love You” designs.

I was hoping to collect the cards on Saturday, but I feel the Printer won’t honour that deadline, so I will have a lovely GIVEAWAY on my Facebook page .

Enjoy your weekend!!

For all Brave Souls

Totally love custom orders! The challenge seriously does my head in some days, but when you see the delighted expression on your customer’s face, it’s all worth it.
This lovely canvas now hangs on the wall at a sweet teen-girl’s room.
Here was the brief:
COLOURS: aqua/teal/turquoise (+2 others); FIGURE: Strawberry/Blonde hair, sassy-like, Taylor Swift-like; QUOTE: one of hope (later chosen by the customer).
Quick search of what Taylor Swift looked like (omgosh) then all plain-sailing from there.
Here is the message I received later that week:
“She absolutely loved it and told me to thank you so much! She said that the clothes the girl is wearing is so much like what she would wear and the hair is how she wants her hair! We all love it thank you so much!” P.H.

The surprising moment for me is how much I enjoy painting the HAIR! Strange, right? I totally get into the layers, the length, the movement, the colour. Totally captures my attention!

Then my beautiful customer ordered a canvas for herself. Similar brief but she chose the 2 birds stencil I already had and once again provided the quote.

Still in love with modeling paste, the colour orange and some gold texture paint for highlights.

It’s a real priviledge to make something specific to a person’s needs.

I take orders all year round but generally take a break during school holidays. Turn-around time is between 2 and 4 weeks, depending on the intricacy of the work.
All customised work is priced individually, according to how many layers and the detail required on the main figure.

123 Challenge for October

Happy October everyone.

Here in my part of the world, the weather is simply spectacular. I am often reminded of how lucky I am to be born, raised and live in this magnificent city.

But without further a-do, here is the 123 Challenge for October:

A special Art Journal page!

The hardest part of all my Art Journal pages is finding that “magic” quote from an old novel. I think it took 3 novels and about 30-40mins to find this gem.

The LACE was coloured with alcohol inks and blending solution.

The SUEDE ribbon was attached using Helmar’s Fabric Glue (addicted to that stuff).

The word YOU has been hand-embossed and swiped with StazOn Jet Black ink.

I had no leather but did have a sheet of black vinyl so ran it through a die-cut machine for the leaves.

But you could hand cut them of course. I just wanted to see if it would cut the vinyl.

This image shows the grungeboard die-cut heart. I was disappointed the embossing folder marks kinda melted in this humidity so the effect is more subtle that I would have preferred.

So happy creating this month!!
